Inside: Rachael’s family reviews their visit to Penguin for lunch in Charlotte, NC. This spot includes great burgers, giant kids’ meals, and a totally free arcade.
Looking for a laid-back, family-friendly spot to grab lunch or dinner in Charlotte? The Penguin in Dilworth brings back the nostalgic feel of the original Penguin Drive-In, a longtime Charlotte favorite that first opened in 1954.
While the original Commonwealth Avenue location closed in 2014, the current restaurant reopened in 2022 under new ownership and continues the tradition with comfort food, retro vibes, and a family-friendly atmosphere. Whether you’re bringing the kids, your pup, or just your appetite, this local favorite is worth the drive.
Families especially love the totally free arcade inside, which makes this one of the most fun kid-friendly restaurants in Charlotte.
It’s also just minutes from NFL 360 Playground at Freedom Park, which makes it an easy stop after a day of play.
A Welcoming Spot for Families: The Penguin in Dilworth, Charlotte
Step inside and you’ll feel like you’re walking into a piece of Charlotte history — but with just the right touch of modern flair. The Penguin’s retro-inspired decor sets a fun tone, and families appreciate the covered, dog-friendly patio where kids can move around and pets are welcome.
When we visited with a large group, they seated us quickly and easily indoors. It’s definitely a spot that knows how to handle families.
What’s on the Menu? Smash Burgers, Seafood & Salads
There’s something for everyone at The Penguin — and yes, you should try the Fried Pickles.
Starters
- Fried Pickles: Hand-battered and served with homemade buttermilk ranch
- Firecracker Shrimp: Tossed in bang bang-style sauce with pineapple salsa and avocado
Mains
- Smash Burger: Two house-seasoned patties with caramelized onions, pickles, American cheese, and smash sauce on a toasted potato bun
- Big Fish Sandwich: Crispy white fish with cole slaw, chipotle remoulade, tomato, pickles, and shredded lettuce on a sesame seed bun
Lighter Options
- Grilled Shrimp & Avocado Salad: A fresh mix of romaine, greens, champagne vinaigrette, grilled shrimp, tortilla strips, avocado, tomatoes, red onions, and cracked black pepper
What About the Kids?
The kids menu is small, but the choices are satisfying and well-sized.

My son ordered the Winky Dinky Dog and ate every bite — he gave it a solid thumbs-up. If your child orders the burger, note that it’s not kid-sized and comes on a sesame seed bun with lots of sesame seeds. If your kid is picky about texture or toppings, ask for a substitute bun when you order.
Free Arcade Inside = Big Win for Families
One of the biggest perks for families is the free arcade inside The Penguin. Kids can play classic arcade games before or after the meal, which makes dining out a lot easier for parents with little ones. If you’re searching for fun restaurants in Charlotte for kids, this feature alone makes The Penguin stand out.
