Looking for a fun, free, and screen-free place to take your kids in Charlotte? ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center should be on your list! This family-focused destination blends a top-notch library, interactive play spaces, and a full-blown children’s theater — all under one very colorful roof.
We’ve visited several times over the years and every time we’re blown away by how much there is to do, for FREE! Here’s everything you’ll want to know before your visit.
Why Families Love ImaginOn
ImaginOn has so much to offer for families! It’s a three-floor space that includes:
- an extensive library with cozy reading nooks
- computers and digital access
- the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte
- The Loft, a special area designed for teens
- tons of spots for imaginative play and exploration
- traveling exhibit space

It was so much bigger than I expected it to be, and there are a lot of spots for kids to creatively play. Blocks, mini trains and buses, and more! It’s a great place to even just take the kids to play.
The space is super colorful, inviting, and intentionally designed for all ages. We love that there are areas that feel just right for toddlers and preschoolers — but also spots that really appeal to teens. It truly encourages creativity for the whole family.
What’s It Like Inside?
Obviously, this is a super popular spot for families.
I saw a lot of families there with young kids, all running around and having fun.
There are hands-on toys, imaginative setups, and areas to sit and read or relax while your kids explore. The vibe is calm but joyful — and it’s an ideal mix of learning and fun.
Plus, since it’s a library, it’s completely free to visit and stay as long as you like.

We love doing both — park play and then cool off inside ImaginOn!

Good news:
