If your kids love rocks, mud, water, or anything that sparkles — get ready. Emerald Hollow Mine near Statesville, NC is a real-deal, muddy-boot, creek-stomping kind of adventure that’s only about an hour from Charlotte, NC. And it’s one of those activities that’s way cooler than you’d expect.

What Is Emerald Hollow Mine?
Emerald Hollow Mine is the only place in the world where the public can dig for emeralds. It’s a real working mine — not just a gem bucket at a roadside gift shop. You’ll get hands-on with dirt, rocks, and even a creek, using provided tools to dig, sluice, and maybe discover something sparkly and special.
In fact, it was also here at Emerald Hollow Mine in 1998 that the largest emerald in North America was found, named the Carolina Queen. Its estimated worth is about half a million dollars.
Three Ways to Mine (and They’re All Fun)
Creeking: Gem Hunting in the Water
This was hands-down our favorite part. There’s a real creek running through the mine property, and yes — you’re allowed to get right in and dig through the sandy bottom for gems.
What to expect:
- You’ll get a sluice box and plastic trowel
- The walk to the creek is short and flat — stroller-friendly, but we recommend carrying little ones to the water
- Look near bends or small waterfalls for the best chance at finding something
We didn’t strike it rich, but we did find a few emeralds, some topaz, and lots of smiles. Other guests we met found amethyst and quartz, too!
Tip: Bring water shoes or old sneakers. Your feet will get wet, and the creek bed is rocky.
Diggin’ at Emerald Hollow Mine
Got a kid who loves digging holes and getting dirty? This part’s for them.
The dig site is a short walk through the woods. You’ll grab a shovel and bucket, pick a spot, and dig up dirt to carry back to the sluice station to see what you’ve found.
It’s messy, exciting, and super satisfying — just be prepared to work for your gems!
Pro parent tip: A wagon or rolling cart would’ve made hauling our bucket back way easier. Next time, we’re bringing one.
Sluicing: Classic Gem Mining Fun
This is the classic “sit and sift” setup. You’ll get a big bucket of dirt (you choose the type and price), sit at a water sluice station, and sift through the sediment to find colorful stones.
It’s relaxing, easy for younger kids, and you’re guaranteed to find something pretty — especially if you get an enriched bucket.
We did this last so we could chill after all the digging and creek splashing. Plus, it’s shady and close to the gift shop.
Turn Your Finds Into Jewelry
Admittedly, I didn’t know what a lapidary was when I went to the mine. So here we go, learning something new.
And, what a fun surprise! Emerald Hollow has its own lapidary shop (aka a place where professionals cut and set stones). They can turn your kid’s special find into a necklace, ring, or keychain.
They only use your stones — no substitutes. It’s super popular, so turnaround times can be months. You won’t have to go back to the mine, unless you want to, because they will ship your products.
Pricing starts around $45. A fun holiday gift idea if your kiddo finds something they’re really proud of!
We met a couple there who had several pieces made by this lapidary and they were currently picking up many more pieces that day. One ring the woman had was made there and it was beautiful!
What To Bring
To make your visit easy and fun, we highly recommend packing the following:
- Wagon or cart – especially if you want to dig
- Water shoes or boots – for creeking
- Towels + change of clothes – your kids will get wet and dirty
- Snacks and water bottles – food options are very limited
- Bug spray + sunscreen
- Zip bags or containers for your gem finds
- Waterproof pad or seat cushion for sluicing
- Plastic digging tools – optional, but some families brought extras
Well-behaved leashed pets are allowed in most outdoor areas.
Important Things to Know
- Admission: $30/adult, $10/kids ages 4–11. Includes tools and all-day access
- Sluice buckets are extra — you pick your bucket type at the sluice station
- You can come and go throughout the day once you’re checked in
- Open daily from 8 am – 6 pm, but call ahead if arriving after 4 pm
- Only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day
