I admit I was apprehensive when I saw the name “Hornets Nest Park.” You see, I was just passing through Charlotte, and looking for a place to stretch my legs with the kids. But a quick search for popular parks assured me: Hornets Nest Park was a local favorite, and right near my route.

I didn’t need to worry about a pest problem. As most locals know, the whole Charlotte area goes by this nickname, from a proud moment in Revolutionary War history. Apparently, British General Cornwallis called the area “a hornet’s nest” after a humiliating defeat in the Battle of Charlotte.

Today, Hornets Nest Park is a popular destination for family outings, photo shoots, and even scenic lunch breaks! And yes, it’s the perfect spot if you’re just passing through, too.

Relax and Recharge at the Lake

As you drive through the main entrance of the park, continue past the community center and then turn into the first parking area on your right. This will put you right next to the fishing lake. Here, you’ll find clean public restrooms, several picnic table options in either sun or shade, and a pretty path around the water.

Hornets Nest Lake is a popular spot for anglers seeking a peaceful fishing experience. During our visit, we noticed a few casual fishermen and learned that the lake is stocked with various fish species, including largemouth bass. Fishing in North Carolina is only permitted with a state-issued fishing license, required by law for ages 16 and up.

Set out from this central hub as if you are going directly across the water, and you’ll find a very short but scenic bridge with a view of the fountain on one side and the larger, calmer part of the lake on your other side. The path wraps all the way around the right-hand side of the lake in a short circle, or you can follow it to the left to see more of the larger lake. However, it’s worth knowing that the path to the left does not loop back around until after it’s taken you to the far end of the park and back!

Whether you just want to sit and feed the ducks, or stretch your legs on a scenic stroll or hike, the fishing lake is the perfect starting place to enjoy Hornets Nest Park.

Slides, Swings, and Big-Time Climbs

You’ll easily spot the main playground from this area, too. It features two playsets side-by-side, as well as a small bouncy animal and a big seesaw. The first and smaller playset is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, with simple stairs, two side-by-side slides, and a few low-to-the-ground climbing options.

But the playground for bigger kids is the real show-stopper! Probably best suited for kids ages 6 to 12 years old, this playground is a tangled knot of climbing structures—one of which leads to a tall open slide for your more daring kiddos!

The swing sets are also just a stone’s throw away from the main playground area, and they include standard swings, baby swings, and one accessible swing. You’ll also notice an additional playground if you look just up a small hill from the swing sets: the Panthers Play60 Playground at Hornets Nest Park, designed to encourage running, climbing and full-body activity inspired by the NFL’s PLAY 60 Movement.

All these play areas are in full sun, so definitely pack sunscreen for the kids if you plan to stay long! For the parents, at least, there is a shaded picnic pavilion next to the main playground and swing sets where you can sit, and ample shade from trees in the grass around the Panthers Play60 playground.

Sports, Trails, and Hidden Highlights

If you feel like getting active, Hornets Nest Park has way more to explore!

Right by the playgrounds, you’ll find a basketball court, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. Back towards the community center, you’ll find a sports complex with four ball fields. At the far end of the park, there are a dozen tennis courts and even a BMX track! However, during our visit, we noticed some active construction in these areas, so it’s a good idea to check ahead if you’re planning to use any specific facilities.

Disc golf at Hornets Nest Park

Families who enjoy disc golf will appreciate the 18-hole course maintained by the Charlotte Disc Golf Club. The front nine holes wind through open areas of the park, while the back nine follow a more wooded, shaded trail. An especially fun feature is the “island hole,” which presents a creative challenge that’s only available for use during official tournaments. One important note: Swimming to retrieve discs around this is strictly prohibited, so pack extras or be ready to leave any wild throws behind!

The far end of the park also serves as a trailhead for the McIntyre Creek Greenway, a stroller-friendly, paved trail that stretches about one mile one-way. The trail runs from Beatties Ford Road at one end to Clarencefield Drive at the other, in full sun the whole way.

As long as you pack sunscreen and water bottles, this trail is a great option for beginner hikers, strollers, and kids on scooters. Just keep in mind it is somewhat secluded, so you may want to go with multiple families or at least one other adult for safety.

Know Before You Go

Hornets Nest Park is an easy win for families — whether you’re planning a full afternoon or just need a quick leg-stretch on a road trip. Parking is free and easy to find, especially near the fishing lake and playgrounds. Restrooms are located by the lake, close to the main activity areas, and there are plenty of picnic tables if you’d like to pack lunch.

Keep in mind that most of the playgrounds and trails are in full sun, so sunscreen, hats, and water bottles are a must. The park is large and well-used, but some areas (like the greenway trail) are a bit more secluded, so bringing a buddy or going with a group is a smart call. Whether you’re chasing ducks, chasing kids, or chasing a disc golf par, Hornets Nest Park is ready for your next adventure.

Picnic Shelter Improvements

The Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation Department is currently working to improve and replace outdated picnic shelters at Hornets Nest Park. Some picnic shelters have been removed and replaced with larger picnic shelters. Open-air picnic tables will be where smaller picnic shelters are removed. But they are not replaced as of spring 2026. If you have any questions or concerns about current updates, contact the North Region Park Manager at the Mecklenburg County Government office at 980-722-2083.
